Design Your Closet Dos and Don’ts

Need to up your storage game for better closet organization? Ready to design your closet, so that you have a place for everything, including your clothing, shoes, and personal gear? Whether you want to create and install a brand-new walk-in closet or just redo your reach-in closet, you have many design options. But first, here are some things you should know about designing your closet.

If you’re ready to design your closet, here are a list of things you should and shouldn’t do.

Do: decide if you have enough space to design your closet the way you want it. Figure out everything you want in your closet, determine how it will be laid out, then take accurate measurements to ensure your design will work in the space you have. After you measure, measure again! You can never be too sure when it comes to accuracy.

Don’t: forget to include in measurements for wall thickness, door frames, and other important features. This will save you a lot of time and money in the long run. And the pain of disappointment if everything has to be redone because one little measurement was off.

Do: start off with the right tools. Just to help calculate measurements, you will need the following tools:

  • 25-foot flat tape measure
  • 2 square finders
  • Angle finder
  • Design software (optional, but highly encouraged)
  • Sketchpad and pencils

Don’t: forget to write all of your measurements down after sketching out your design, as you will need to refer to them time and again.

Do: be aware of obstacles, such as light switches and fixtures, windows, vents, outlets, and doors. Be sure to add them on your sketched design and in your software program if you choose to use one.

Don’t: be afraid to work around these obstacles or hire someone who can move them, so you can achieve the closet of your dreams!
